Met#1 – Reminiscing Concert Information

After 32 performances of Amadeus at The Sydney Opera House through December and January, the exquisite strings of The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) led by Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams (TMO Chief Conductor and Music Director and Conductor for Amadeus), return for their first Met Concert of 2023 in an event that promises to take each audience member on their own special trip down memory lane.

Known for delivering performances of exquisite depth and passion, this exceptional experience within the charmingly historic Marrickville Town Hall will examine wonderful soundscapes from each unique work and encourage audience members to reflect on special people and places from their own past.

The young, yet supremely talented Felix Mendelssohn wrote String Symphony no 10 when he was just 14 years old. The work, which is presented in one movement, displays the strong influences in Mendelssohn’s life from the slow Haydnesque introduction through to hints of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), who was the second eldest son of Johann Sebastian. However, the dramatic dash that completes the work is pure Mendelssohn.

Australian composer Graeme Koehne dedicated his melancholic work of Time is a River to his mother. This reflective piece featuring clarinet soloist Andrew Doyle with the string section of The Metropolitan Orchestra represents the river of time, pursuing its relentless course, by turns gentle, swirling, turbulent and free-flowing. The clarinet represents a form of persona that is carried along by the flow of the strings, pursuing its own diverse range of characters: melancholic, reflective, playful, ecstatic, capricious, finally reaching a state of acquiescence or acceptance.

In Souvenir de Florence, Piotr Tchaikovsky creates a remembrance of a city he adored, building a piece that bursts at the seams with love and joy. Written at a time of great happiness in this composer’s tormented life, Tchaikovsky reminisces on the beauty, colour and warmth of Italy with a work that is filled with fluctuating atmospheres and complex rhythmic structures in a tour-de-force for string ensemble.

The special event marks the beginning of what will be a remarkable concert season for this resilient and dynamic orchestra.
