TMO Junior – Young Instrumentalist Festival 2026

A welcoming, non-competitive performance opportunity for primary and high school age musicians

THE METROPOLITAN ORCHESTRA is proud to present its annual
TMO JUNIOR – YOUNG INSTRUMENTALIST FESTIVAL

Providing a welcoming, non-competitive performance opportunity for young musicians in a supportive environment, young musicians of all ages and abilities are invited to play one piece, either solo or with accompaniment. Performers will be allocated a session along with similarly aged/skilled musicians, where they will get to perform their chosen piece on stage. Each session will be one hour long, with adjudications and medals presented immediately at the end of each session.

OPEN TO Primary and High School students of all ages playing wind, brass, strings, guitar or piano.

5 Session times between 10 am-5 pm

ENTRY FEE

  • The entry fee for each performer is $45
  • If an individual would like to do 2 performances using different instruments, they are eligible to purchase a Double Performer Ticket for $80.00*
  • Audience members attend FREE and do not require a ticket.

ADJUDICATIONS AND MEDALS Unlike an eisteddfod, there are no rankings awarded or winners announced. Each student is on their own musical journey, all of which we want to celebrate. Each performer will receive WRITTEN FEEDBACK from our highly experienced adjudicators, along with a TMO YOUNG INSTRUMENTALIST MEDAL!

SESSION TIMES There will be 5 sessions on the day between 10 am & 5 pm, with musicians of a similar age and standard grouped together.

Session One: 10.00 am
Session Two: 11.15 am
Session Three: 12.30 pm
Session Four: 2.15 pm
Session Five: 3.30 pm

Participants will be advised of their session time 2 weeks in advance.

PIECE SELECTION and TIME LIMIT Participants can perform a piece of their choosing.  Students at an AMEB standard of Grade 5 or below will have a time limit of 3 minutes.  Students at 6th grade and above have a time limit of 5 minutes. 

ACCOMPANIST An accompanist will be provided free of charge for the performance.  There will be no chance for rehearsal on the day with the accompanist, however, you will be able to organise a rehearsal prior to the festival directly with the accompanist, for a separate fee.  The accompanist’s details will be provided following enrolment. 

Performers are allowed to use their own accompanist if desired.

* Double Performer Tickets must be held by the same individual. These tickets cannot be split/shared with anyone else. They are valid for two performances for this TMO Junior Instrumentalist festival with a different instrument at each performance. NB: Performances may not be scheduled during the same session.
