Met#3 – Music For A New World Concert Information

Featuring Dvořák’s inspiring symphony number 9, New World, plus a moving work from Australian composer Stephen Lalor, this wonderful third concert in The Metropolitan Orchestra’s 2023 Met concert series showcases a unique world premiere with Synthesizer and orchestra to highlight how music is constantly evolving to shape a new world.

This luscious event starts with the Mima Concert Overture, created by internationally renowned Australian composer Dr Stephen Lalor. The work, which was created for a new state-of-the-art pavilion, was inspired by the distinct natural environment and history of Lake Macquarie.

After the storm of Mima, TMO will present Strange Roses, three movements for Synthesizer and Orchestra, in another world premiere work from inspiring Australian Composer Heather Shannon. This piece explores themes of the Australian Gothic and the uncanny displacement and hauntings of cultural forms with the widescreen atmospheric nature of the synthesizer acting as a shadowy echo of the orchestra in what will be a haunting and uniquely melancholy world premiere performance. Best known for her work as one-quarter of internationally renowned independent rock band, The Jezabels, Shannon has spent most of the past decade writing and recording award-winning albums and performing in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, the O2 Arena (London), Webster Hall (New York) and at festivals such as Lollapalooza (Chicago), and Glastonbury (UK). This will be the second brand-new orchestral work from Heather Shannon to be premiered by The Metropolitan Orchestra and is sure to carve a historic path for future composers to showcase unique and rarely featured solo instruments (and artists) with a full symphony orchestra.

Antonin Dvořák’s richly emotive New World Symphony number 9 was a ground-breaking work of its time and directly reflects his experience as a new immigrant in an exciting new world. The work recalls Bohemian folk music, African American spirituals, Native American poetry and German symphonic structure in a concoction of old and new both inspired with nostalgia from his homeland and the many unique influences of this fantastic new world. The work was not only unique, but broke ground for musicians and composers across multiple genres to explore the influences of the many different cultures that were at the time, overlooked by mainstream composers.

This work will complete an amazing performance featuring new works, works inspired by new creations, and an incredible symphony dedicated to a new world.

Supported by the Inner West Council.

TMO’s next Concert will be at Riverside Theatre on Saturday October 14th.
