Met#2 – Carnivals & Adventures Concert Information

The Metropolitan Orchestra’s second Met Concert for 2023 will examine life, adventure and nature with three energised works including a world premiere with Australian saxophonist and composer, Nicholas Russoniello.

The concert begins with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture which was part of a “Nature, Life and Love” trilogy of overtures. Carnival forms the second part, “Life” and dates from a period when honours began falling on his shoulders. The piece was the second of a triptych of concert overtures intended to portray impressions of what a human soul might experience, in both positive and negative aspects. Nature, Life, and Love was his original name for the set. But the composer soon decided to publish them with more distinct identities. Dvořák provisionally used the title Life (Carnival) in his sketches for the second of these pieces, but later opted for the more general Carnival. This work does indeed depict the high-spirited tumult of a festive carnival setting.

For the world premiere of his electrifying new concerto, award winning composer and saxophonist Nicholas Russoniello will join The Metropolitan Orchestra for this virtuosic new work which has been inspired by the dramatic Mount Keira and the landscapes of the Illawarra region. The world premiere of “Where the Mountain” brings together the rare combination of alto saxophone soloist with orchestra in what will be a remarkable concert event inspired by the sights and sounds of nature.

Ibsen’s Peer Gynt explores and satirises Norwegian culture through the exploits of its charming and arrogant title character, a Norwegian peasant who impulsively abducts a bride from her wedding and then abandons her in order to travel the world on other adventures. Grieg’s Peer Gynt suites are among his best-known works, which are praised for their lyricism and wide range of styles, instruments and orchestral effects used to depict Peer Gynt’s adventures around the world.

Come on this fantastic and joyful journey through carnival (life), nature and adventure without leaving the country (or city), with The Metropolitan Orchestra led by Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams in May at Marrickville Town Hall.

Supported by the Inner West Council.

TMO’s next Met Concert will be at Marrickville Town Hall on Sunday August 20th.
