The Russian title of Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony means “passionate” or “emotional”, but it is a word reflective of concurrent suffering. This Metropolitan Orchestra’s next Met Concert will explore depths of feeling as expressed through Tchaikovsky’s outstanding symphony, while also examining the transition from light to darkness with the world premiere of Deeper, which also showcases the truly mesmerising sounds of the Contrabass Saxophone.

This performance presents two world premieres from Australian Composers. Paul Cutlan is a multi-instrumentalist and composer specialising in improvisation, cross-cultural music, jazz and hybrid genres. In this concert, TMO presents his new work titled “Towards Infinity”. The second new work on the program is also the title of the concert. Jim Coyle is well known for creating works of critical acclaim that are both thought-provoking and exceptionally accessible. The Deeper Concerto is a transition from light to darkness, exploring the passage of time at both macro and micro levels. This work also pays homage and sensitivity to Tchaikovsky’s symphony #6 to ensure a balanced and sublime musical experience.
