Journey Through Folk, Jazz and Romance in Met Concert 2

The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) will take the audience on a journey through a wonderfully varied program including gypsy folk inspired music by Kodaly, piano virtuosity with Jazz and Classical inspiration from Gershwin and ending with the famous theme and variations from Elgar.

We begin our global journey in Galanta (now part of Slovakia), where the combination of a local gypsy band with deep origins of Hungarian Folk music come together in the folk inspired Dances of Galanta from Zoltan Kodaly.

Off to America with Gershwin’s popular Rhapsody in Blue, one of the composer’s most famous works combining elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. Created on a train, the piece represents a musical kaleidoscope of America. Three time winner of the Australian Entertainment MO Award for Variety Instrumental Performer of the Year, and a Number One charting recording artist, pianist Bernard Walz joins TMO and Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams for this exhilarating piece.

Back across the Atlantic to complete our journey in England with Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Commenced in a spirit of humour and comprising fourteen variations on an original theme, the variations continue in deep seriousness as the composer sketches his friends in music.

“Wonderful music delivered by an orchestra can come from a variety of backgrounds. This performance will present 3 very well known works, each of which has very different roots and styles and will elicit different responses from the audience,” says Sarah-Grace Williams, TMO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.
